Constellation Argo Navis [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Canopus on July 6

Fixed star Canopus, Alpha Carinae, is a 0.7 magnitude white star located in the Keel of the Ship, Argo Constellation. The traditional name Canopus is a Latinisation of the Ancient Greek name Κάνωβος (Kanôbos). Its name comes from the mythological Canopus, who was a navigator for Menelaus, king of Sparta.

Canopus is the second brightest star in the night-time sky, after Sirius. Canopus’s brightness and location well off the ecliptic make it popular for space navigation. Many spacecraft carry a special camera known as a “Canopus Star Tracker”.

Canopus Star Astrology

Fixed star Canopus is of the nature of Saturn and Jupiter. It gives piety, conservatism, a wide and comprehensive knowledge, voyages and educational work, and changes evil to good. [1]

Canopus has been noted several times in the nativities of writers and film actors and especially of those persons who, in our times, have had to undertake many journeys in connection with their position. [3]

Canopus, α star of Carina the hull, and once the α of the whole ship, is a truly brilliant sight, but 53° below the equator. Honored by Ptolemy with a Saturn-Jupiter simile the name has two possible origins: first, Canopus, or Kanobos, was the chief navigator of the Greek fleet that sacked Troy, 1183 BC, and who died near Alexandria, Egypt, some years later. A monument was erected to him there, and in fact a town was renamed after him. The site is close to the present Aboukir, scene of famous naval battles ever since. In due course, it is said, it was Ptolemy who named the great star in Argo after him also.

But a still earlier source of the name is the Coptic-Egyptian Kahi-Nub, Golden Earth, with a truly alchemical connotation. And with this star practically on the center-line of Cancer, 14°58′, and conjunct with the wondrous Sirius, what better hope of mastery of Life can one ask than to have these two promising symbols well placed and aspected on one’s horoscope. Only let it not be forgotten that the quest for the Golden Fleece is still an arduous journey, even for those who will actually find it. Not all the stars together can bestow it without the questor earning it for him or her self. [4]

Constellation Argo is the ship that carried Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece is today composed of the constellations Carina, Puppis, Pyxis, and Vela. In classical astrology it is correlative of events concerning the sea and shipping and of rivers and springs. It also has been said to be connected with death by drowning, especially if connected with the eighth house. Tetrabiblos asserts that its bright stars are of the nature of Saturn and Jupiter. [2]

According to Ptolemy the bright stars are like Saturn and Jupiter. Argo is said to give prosperity in trade and voyages, and strength of mind and spirit, but it has been observed to accompany cases of drowning, a notable instance being furnished by the horoscope of Shelley, where Argo occupied the 8th house and contained the Sun, Venus and Uranus. Drowning is particularly to be feared when Saturn afflicts the Moon in or from Argo. It is probably on account of this constellation that Virgo, especially the first decan, is frequently found to be connected with drowning. [1]

Jupiter conjunct Canopus: Great pride, religion used for business ends, voyages, honor and preferment but reversal through public dissatisfaction. [1] This is a similar energy to Venus. They have family oriented ties with others who delight in giving these individuals a helping hand towards success. In return, however, they give back very little to those who have helped them. They do not harm others, but are simply looking out for themselves. They do not use any effort in controlling how things are done but just depend on others to bring about their security. They are in the habit of consuming rich foods and do not take the time to develop a good diet plan. They simply accept whatever food others offer them. [5] Warren Buffett 0°20′, Mark Twain 2°01′

Saturn conjunct Canopus: Discontented, occult interests, unfavorable for reputation and domestic matters, little prominence but may do good. [1] Linked to a badly placed Saturn, the tendency to depression and even suicide is inherent. However, if Saturn and Jupiter are well placed in the chart, harmonizing and spiritual powers are evoked. [3] This puts the natives in a position where others depend on them for help, financial and otherwise. These are the persons who are left “holding the bag”. They give so much to others that their own finances are at the minimum. There is a restriction here so that these persons are unable to develop their own success. Others benefit at the expense of these individuals. This can cause physical problems such as cysts developing in the chest and stomach areas. [5] David Beckham 0°34′, Mel B 2°06′
